Sara Lage

i was browsing through pictures of madrid fashion week and started seeing these bizarre creations by Sara Lage. they're very horror film -esque. anyway, i found them to be very intriguing. she says she is inspired by dada and surrealism, so my attraction to them definitely makes sense. i like the color scheme she is working with as well (black white gray and dark purple).

  1. I couldn't see the Dadaist influence until I stumbled upon the third picture from the second link you put up (the second link of the "if you want to see more..."). But it's so blatant... It's a simple reproduction of Man Ray's Coat Stand. Maybe I should study her more because the idea seems cool, but how it's done... I'm not so sure about that part. Does she explain, in one of the interviews, about how she portrays the surrealistic/dadaist aspects in the work?

  2. The (yes, very obvious) reference to Man Ray's coatstand was the clearest that i could find to her Dadaist influence as well (although the general aesthetic of his mannequins was also semi-apparent to me). The few pieces of writing i could find on Lage (she is a new designer, and only 23) were difficult to understand because of poor translations, but i have to wonder if maybe she is also referencing/reinterpreting the sort of "anti-art" idea of Dadaism. While much of runway and couture fashion is not particularly wearable already, i think that many of her creations (at least from what she showed at fashion week) push this a quite a good deal further. (particularly with masks/various ways she has covered the models' faces as well as the false-nudes that appear a few times.)
unfortunately i found as much as i possibly could on her (though i wouldn't say not to try, because who knows with the great internet out there), but i'll definitely keep my eye on her and post if i find anything more in the future.
